KATHMANDU: The government is planning to ban the import of electric scooters with a range of less than 100 kilometers.

The Department of Transport Management (DoTM) has prepared a draft of the new Vehicle Import, Production and Installation Directive, 2025, which states that only electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers with a minimum range of 100 kilometers can be imported into the country.

If implemented, the rule will prevent the entry of low-range scooters into the domestic market.

Electric scooters from over 50 brands are currently available in the Nepali market. Many of these scooters off range of less than 100 kilometers.
