KATHMANDU: When people talk about electric vehicles (EVs), the first question that often comes to mind is: “How much range does it offer?” Since EVs cannot be conveniently charged everywhere, driving range has become a key factor for most buyers.
In China, the world’s largest market for electric vehicles, the average range of EVs has reached 538 kilometers over the third quarter of 2025, according to the Chinese automobile news portal — CarNewsChina.
In 2020, the average range of China-made EVs was 425 kilometers. That figure has increased 24% to 538 kilometers in just five years.
Among the pure EV models launched by Chinese automakers in 2025, models offering a driving range of 500–599 km dominate the market, followed by those with a driving range of 600–699 km and 400–499 km, respectively. In contrast, EVs offering up to 300 km range have become very rare in recent production.
The primary reason for this improvement is the increase in battery energy density which allows batteries of the same size and weight to deliver greater range than before. Additionally, the declining cost of lithium-ion batteries has enabled manufacturers to install larger-capacity battery packs which further boost driving range.
