Over 44,000 EVs imported in 2024/25

KATHMANDU: Nepal imported more than 44,000 units of electric vehicles (EVs) in the fiscal year 2024/25.

According to the foreign trade data released by the Department of Customs on Tuesday, a total of 44,535 electric vehicles, including scooters, motorcycles, three-wheelers, buses, microbuses, cars, jeeps and vans, were brought into the country during the period.

The total value of these vehicles was Rs 43.99 billion. Likewise, the government mobilized Rs 22.76 billion in revenue from these imports.

Among the various EV categories, electric three-wheelers topped the import chart with 16,505 units. Of these, 9,728 units were fully assembled while 6,777 units were imported as knocked down units. The total value of three-wheeler imports was Rs 1.68 billion.

The second-largest import category was electric cars, jeeps and vans. During the fiscal year, Nepal imported 13,578 electric cars, jeeps and vans worth 31.76 billion. This included 11,951 passenger cars and 1,626 vans. The government collected Rs 19.70 billion in revenue from these imports.

The total value of these vehicles was Rs 43.99 billion and the government mobilized Rs 22.76 billion in revenue from these imports.

According to the data, the largest volume of electric cars, jeeps, and vans (7,431 units) fell in the 51 to 100 kW motor capacity range. Similarly, 4,732 units were up to 50 kW category, 1,362 units in the 101-200 kW category, 42 units in the 201-300 kW range and two units having motor capacity above 300 kW.

The government levies customs duty based on peak motor power capacity on EV imports.

Similarly, Nepal imported 11,319 units of electric motorcycles and scooters worth Rs 4.39 billion in the previous fiscal year. This generated Rs 370 million in revenue for the government

Likewise, 3,132 units of electric microbuses and buses worth Rs 9.48 billion were imported into the country in 2024/25. These included 1,830 units in 11-14 seat category, 1,260 units in 15-25 seat category and 16 units of large buses. The government earned Rs 2.10 billion in revenue from electric microbus and bus imports.
