Ride Nepal Series – Part 9: Rara Lake Ride

The ninth chapter of the Ride Nepal Series takes riders to Rara Lake in western Nepal, one of the country’s most pristine and remote natural destinations. Located at an altitude of 2,990 meters, Rara is Nepal’s largest and deepest lake, set within the protected landscape of Rara National Park in Karnali Province.

Gazetted in 1976, Rara National Park is Nepal’s smallest national park, yet it holds exceptional ecological value. The lake is surrounded by rolling green hills covered with juniper forests, creating a calm and isolated setting.

For riders, the destination offers not only a striking natural reward but also a rare opportunity to experience the wilderness of western Nepal, far from the country’s more frequented routes.

The Rara Lake motorbike ride is an overland journey through the diverse geography of western Nepal. The route takes riders from the plains of the Terai into the rugged hill regions and finally into the high mountains of Karnali.

Compared to eastern and central Nepal, this region remains less developed, making the ride more challenging and demanding.

The journey from Kathmandu to Rara Lake covers approximately 860 kilometers. Riders generally follow the Prithvi Highway to Butwal before heading west and north through:

Butwal → Surkhet → Manma → Nagma → Jumla → Talcha → Rara

Riders entering from Nepalgunj typically ride via Kohalpur to Surkhet before joining the main route towards Jumla and Rara. For those with limited time, flying from Kathmandu to Jumla and renting a motorcycle locally is a common alternative, reducing the riding distance while still preserving the core experience.

Depending on the starting point, the ride duration and distance vary. From Kathmandu, riders usually plan 6-7 days to complete the journey. Those starting from Nepalgunj cover roughly 380 kilometers over about five days, while riders starting from Jumla travel around 90 kilometers, typically completing the ride in three days.

The route reaches a maximum altitude of approximately 3,662 meters, with riding conditions ranging from moderate to extreme depending on road quality, weather, and terrain.

Road conditions are highly variable. Riders encounter long stretches of rough roads, gravel sections, and narrow mountain trails, particularly beyond Surkhet and on the approach to Jumla and Talcha. Weather can change quickly, and high-altitude riding demands patience, endurance, and careful throttle control.

Accommodation is available in the form of hotels and lodges at major stops such as Surkhet and Jumla, while facilities become more basic closer to Rara Lake. Camping near the lake is possible in designated areas, allowing riders to fully experience the calm and isolation of the region.

Fuel planning is critical on this route. Jumla is the last reliable fuel station before Rara, and availability beyond this point is limited and unpredictable. Riders are advised to plan fuel stops carefully to avoid shortages in remote sections.

The primary attraction of the ride is Rara Lake itself, known for its clear blue waters and peaceful surroundings. Other highlights include Rara National Park, Murma Top, opportunities for bird watching, and boating on the lake. The journey also offers continuous views of forested hills, alpine landscapes, and traditional settlements that reflect the unique culture of Karnali.

Riders must obtain the required permits before entering Rara National Park. The park entry fee is Rs 1,500 for SAARC nationals, with an additional 13 percent VAT payable at the designated ticket counter per person. Permit requirements should be verified in advance, as regulations may change.

The Rara Lake ride is not about speed or comfort but endurance and respect for the terrain. Challenging yet rewarding, it leads riders to one of Nepal’s most serene and untouched destinations, making Rara a fitting highlight of Ride Nepal Series – Part 9.
