KATHMANDU: Stellantis is in advanced talks with Leapmotor to develop a new Opel-branded electric SUV, according to Reuters.
The model will use Leapmotor’s EV technology and is expected to be produced at Stellantis’ Zaragoza plant in Spain. Production could begin in 2028 with a target of around 50,000 units per year.
The SUV is likely to share its platform with Leapmotor’s B10 compact SUV. Under the plan, Leapmotor will supply key components, including electrical systems, while Opel will handle design.
The partnership aims to reduce development costs and time. Stellantis is also looking to improve plant utilization in Europe and compete with Chinese brands like BYD.
The two companies already have a joint venture, Leapmotor International, for global markets.
Stellantis says discussions are ongoing. A final agreement could be reached soon.
