KATHMANDU: CCTV cameras are being installed in public transport vehicles operating in the Kathmandu Valley.
The Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office formally launched the initiative on Wednesday. The program includes the installation of CCTV and dashboard cameras in public vehicles.
Traffic Police spokesperson Naresh Raj Subedi said the move aims to control theft and misconduct inside public transport. He said cameras will also help identify the causes of road accidents.
The Traffic Police Office is working in coordination with transport entrepreneurs. Complaints related to theft and misbehavior by drivers or conductors are frequent, he said.
Vehicle owners will bear the cost of CCTV installation. The office aims to equip all public transport vehicles as soon as possible. Subedi said transport operators have shown a positive response. He expects the installation process to move quickly.
He also said GPS systems will be introduced in long-route vehicles in the near future.
