KATHMANDU:Mitsubishi has officially confirmed the return of the iconic Mitsubishi Pajero nameplate, nearly five years after production ended in 2021. The new-generation model is scheduled to make its global debut this fall.

The revived Pajero will be a dedicated off-road SUV built on a ladder-frame platform derived from the Mitsubishi Triton pickup. The company has also confirmed the return of the Mitsubishi Montero name, which is used for Pajero models in several international markets.

Mitsubishi says the new Pajero will serve as its flagship SUV. While it will share its basic architecture with the Triton, it will feature a unique suspension setup, four-wheel-drive system and a completely different interior designed to offer greater comfort and refinement.

The Japanese automaker also revealed that Pajero will become more than a single model. According to the company’s long-term product roadmap, at least two additional Pajero-based vehicles are under development, creating a broader Pajero family similar to how some manufacturers have expanded their SUV lineups.

The return of Pajero is part of Mitsubishi’s plan to introduce 13 new models globally by March 2032. The lineup will include SUVs, pickup trucks, minivans and kei cars. Of the 13 models, five will be hybrid vehicles and five will be fully electric.

Mitsubishi has not yet disclosed detailed specifications or powertrain options for the new Pajero. However, global sales are expected to begin in 2027 following its world premiere later this year.

The Pajero remains one of Mitsubishi’s most successful vehicles. The SUV was sold in more than 170 countries and regions, with cumulative sales exceeding 3.25 million units across four generations.
