KATHMANDU: Mitsubishi has revealed the 2027 Eclipse Sportback EV, marking the brand’s return to the North American electric vehicle market after more than a decade. However, the new electric crossover is based on the next-generation Nissan Leaf developed under the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.
The Eclipse Sportback EV will go on sale in the United States and Canada in late summer or early autumn 2026 through around 300 Mitsubishi dealerships.
While Mitsubishi describes it as an all-new model, the company has confirmed that the EV is sourced from Nissan and built on the next-generation Leaf platform.
The Eclipse Sportback receives Mitsubishi-specific front and rear bumpers, a unique lighting signature, new alloy wheels and the brand’s signature Triple Diamond badge. Apart from these cosmetic changes, the vehicle shares its mechanical components with the Nissan Leaf.
Power comes from a 75 kWh liquid-cooled battery pack. The EV supports 150 kW DC fast charging, allowing the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in around 35 minutes.
The model also features a North American Charging Standard (NACS) charging port, giving owners access to Tesla’s Supercharger network in North America.
Mitsubishi has not yet revealed the official driving range or pricing for the Eclipse Sportback EV.
The Nissan Leaf on which it is based offers an EPA-estimated driving range of up to 488 km in the S+ variant, while the range drops to 417 km in the top-spec Platinum+ variant.
In the US, the Leaf starts at $29,990, suggesting the Eclipse Sportback EV could be priced slightly higher.
The launch expands Mitsubishi’s electrified lineup in North America, where the Outlander PHEV has so far been its primary electrified offering following the discontinuation of the i-MiEV several years ago.
