KATHMANDU: Mitsubishi Motors is preparing to launch a new SUV later this year, raising speculation about the possible return of the iconic Mitsubishi Pajero.

The update came from Keisuke Kishiura, who described the upcoming model as a “true cross-country SUV.”

That statement suggests the new vehicle could be a rugged body-on-frame SUV with strong off-road ability. It has led many to believe that Mitsubishi may revive the Pajero nameplate.

The Pajero is one of Mitsubishi’s most recognized SUVs. It earned a strong reputation for durability, off-road strength and long-distance touring ability.

The first-generation Pajero was introduced in 1982. The second and third generations followed in 1991 and 1999.

Mitsubishi unveiled the fourth-generation Pajero at the Paris Motor Show. The model received a facelift in 2015.

Production in Japan ended in 2019. The SUV remained popular in markets like India before being discontinued around 2020 due to BS6 emission rules.

If Mitsubishi brings back the Pajero, it could re-enter the growing global market for capable ladder-frame SUVs.
