KATHMANDU: Tata Motors’ upcoming Avinya electric vehicle range is likely to be based on the Chery-JLR platform, according to recent reports.
The same platform is currently used in the Freelander 8 electric SUV. Earlier, Tata had planned to build Avinya models on JLR’s Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA). However, the cost of adapting that platform is said to be too high.
Switching to the Chery-JLR (CJLR) platform is expected to reduce costs and speed up development. It will also help Tata bring its premium EVs to market faster.
The report suggests that the P2 program will be launched before P1. This means the Avinya X could be the first model to arrive, likely around 2027.
The Avinya X is expected to offer multiple battery options, ranging from 65 kWh to 80 kWh. Production will take place at Tata’s Panapakkam plant in Tamil Nadu.
Tata Motors has stated that Avinya is being developed as a global premium EV brand. The company plans to use multiple scalable platforms while focusing on its own design and engineering strengths.
The first Avinya model will use the Freelander-based platform developed under the CJLR partnership. It will be manufactured at the new TMPV-JLR facility in Panapakkam.
The Avinya lineup is part of Tata’s strategy to expand its presence in the global premium EV segment.
