KATHMANDU: Driving licenses will soon be delivered to applicants’ homes for a fee of Rs 40. The Department of Transport Management (DoTM), Department of Postal Services and Security Printing Center have signed a tripartite agreement to start the service.
The agreement was signed on Tuesday at the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport.
Under the agreement, license data generated through the Electronic Driving License and Vehicle Registration System (EDLVRS) will be sent directly to the Security Printing Center. The center will print the licenses and hand them over to the postal service for delivery.
Applicants will be able to choose between collecting their license from the transport office or receiving it at their preferred address.
According to DoTM Director Keshav Khatiwada, the system required for home delivery has already been prepared. The service will come into operation within a few days.
Applicants choosing home delivery will have to provide their complete address while filling out the application form. Once the license is printed, it will be delivered to the same address through the postal service.
The department will also provide an express delivery option. Applicants can choose either normal or express delivery while applying for the license.
Normal home delivery will cost Rs 40, while express delivery will cost Rs 70. The service will be available for new licenses, category additions and license renewals.
Khatiwada said licenses could be delivered within one to two days in areas close to Kathmandu after printing. Delivery to distant destinations could take up to a week.
The home delivery system is being introduced following a government decision to deliver government documents, including passports, citizenship copies and driving licenses, to citizens’ homes through the postal service.
