Japanese automakers promote multiple powertrain options as China focuses on EVs

KATHMANDU: Japanese automakers are promoting different vehicle technologies, including hybrids, hydrogen and alternative fuels, instead of relying only on electric vehicles. The approach was highlighted at the Japan Mobility Show Bizweek 2026, which opened in Chiba on October 13, writes NIKKEI.

Japan’s automotive industry follows a ‘multi-pathway’ strategy, which supports different technologies to reduce emissions. The strategy contrasts with China’s growing focus on battery-powered EVs.

At the event, Suzuki displayed its Victoris SUV, which runs on compressed natural gas (CNG) or compressed biomethane. Mitsubishi showcased its Outlander plug-in hybrid, while Daihatsu presented a concept engine that uses ammonia mixed with hydrogen.

Daihatsu said the technology could offer an alternative to petrol-powered engines. The exhibition also featured autonomous electric buses and wireless charging systems, but battery EVs had a limited presence.

The approach differed from the Paris Motor Show, held during the same week, where Chinese brands including BYD, Chery and Geely showcased their latest electric vehicles alongside European automakers.

Renault Group CEO Francois Provost said the company was accelerating its shift towards electrification, from hybrids to fully electric vehicles. Renault said electrified models account for two-thirds of its passenger car sales in Europe.

Analysts have questioned whether Japan’s strategy reflects global market trends, as EV adoption continues to grow. However, Japanese automakers are also developing electric vehicles to compete with Chinese brands.

Toyota’s bZ3X electric SUV, developed with local partners in China, sells around 10,000 units a month. However, it remains behind the Tesla Model Y, which sold around 55,000 units in China in August.
