KATHMANDU: Chinese automaker Chery has unveiled a 1.44-megawatt (MW) electric vehicle charging system capable of adding up to 500 km of driving range in just five minutes.

The new system, called Volt-Dragon, is part of China’s growing competition to develop faster EV charging technology. According to a report by CarNewsChina, it can charge a compatible battery from 10% to 97% in 6 minutes and 50 seconds.

Chery’s charging technology ranks among the fastest announced in China. The company says the system can also deliver 500 km of range in eight minutes under more conservative conditions.

Chery’s new charging system uses its CheryMind technology, which adjusts charging power according to changes in battery temperature. The system is designed to maintain high charging speeds while helping protect battery health.

However, Chery has not yet released detailed performance figures for charging in extreme cold or hot weather.

Chery has begun installing the new charging system and plans to open 100 charging points across 10 Chinese cities. The company aims to establish 20,000 vehicle-to-grid (V2G) charging stations worldwide by 2029.

V2G technology allows compatible electric vehicles to send electricity back to the power grid. This can help balance electricity demand during peak hours.
