KATHMANDU: Chinese automaker Chery has secured a design patent in India for its Tiggo V SUV, signaling its continued interest in the country’s fast-growing SUV market.
The Tiggo V is based on Chery’s T1TP modular platform, which was originally showcased as a multi-purpose concept capable of transforming into an SUV, pickup truck and camper van. The patented design in India features the SUV body style, but the platform has been developed to support multiple body configurations.
The flexible architecture is designed to meet different mobility needs. It can be configured as a conventional family SUV for everyday driving, converted into a double-cab pickup for utility use, or adapted into a camper van for recreational travel.
The Tiggo V is also expected to feature Chery’s Super Hybrid plug-in hybrid powertrain. If it shares the setup used in the Tiggo 8, it could combine a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor, producing up to 352 hp and 515 Nm of torque.
Although a patent filing does not confirm a production or launch plan, it often reflects a company’s intention to protect its designs in a potential future market. Chery has already filed several design patents in India as it prepares to strengthen its presence in the country.
The company is expected to enter the Indian market through its partnership with JSW Group, with the Jetour T2 already confirmed for launch later in 2026.
If approved for production, the Tiggo V could further expand Chery’s SUV lineup and potentially pave the way for a pickup truck based on the same modular platform, according to Rushlane.
