KATHMANDU: Chinese automaker Chery is open to partnering with US carmakers as it explores ways to enter the American market. The company is also preparing to launch its brand in Canada early next year.
Chery Vice President Charlie Zhang shared the plans in an interview with Reuters at the company’s headquarters in Wuhu, China, on October 21, 2026.
Chery is one of China’s largest vehicle exporters. It sells vehicles under brands such as Omoda and Jaecoo. The company has expanded rapidly in Europe and other international markets and is now exploring opportunities in North America.
Chinese automakers currently face major barriers to entering the US market. These include tariffs exceeding 100% and regulations related to data security.
Zhang said Chery was exploring different ways to enter the market, including potential partnerships with American automakers. However, he did not disclose details about possible partners or the structure of such agreements.
He also said Chery could develop vehicles without relying on Chinese hardware or software if required.
According to Zhang, the company is confident it can find a technical solution that meets US requirements.
Chery is preparing to launch its brand in Canada in early 2027. The move would give the company a foothold in North America as it continues to expand internationally.
The company has gained attention for offering vehicles with advanced technology at competitive prices. Its global expansion includes markets where established automakers face growing competition from Chinese brands.
However, Chery has not announced a confirmed launch date for the US market or identified any American automaker as a potential partner.
