KATHMANDU: Mercedes-Benz is developing a new smart rear-window technology that allows drivers to display digital messages and safety warnings to vehicles behind them.
The system uses tiny LED elements embedded in the rear window. These remain invisible when not in use, ensuring they do not obstruct the driver’s rear view.
The technology can display messages such as ‘Keep Distance’ to warn tailgating drivers and a crossed-out headlight symbol to ask following vehicles to switch off their high beams. It can also alert other motorists about pedestrians crossing the road, accidents ahead and vehicles preparing to reverse.

Mercedes is also working on a new projection system for windshields and side windows. The technology uses a dashboard-mounted projector and a transparent film laminated into the glass to display digital content.
One of its key features is the ability to show separate content to the driver and front passenger. This could allow passengers to watch videos while the vehicle is moving without distracting the driver.
Other possible applications include video calls and displaying nearby points of interest, such as restaurants, hotels and tourist attractions. Mercedes-Benz has not announced a timeline for introducing these technologies in production vehicles.
