KATHMANDU: Toyota has revealed three new ultra-luxury sports cars as it targets the high-end performance segment dominated by Porsche and Ferrari.

The models include the GR GT, the GR GT3 racing version, and the Lexus LFA concept, an electric successor to the previous LFA supercar.

Toyota plans to launch the GR GT around 2027. The GR GT3 and the new Lexus LFA concept do not have confirmed release dates. Prices have not been announced, but all three are expected to fall in the ultra-luxury range, similar to the previous LFA, which cost about USD 240,000.

Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda said the company has been working relentlessly to build better performance cars. Speaking at Toyota’s Woven City in Shizuoka, he said Toyota wants to carry its “secret recipe” of engineering excellence into the future.

For the first time, Toyota is using all-aluminum frames on production cars. This makes the vehicles lighter, stronger, and more stable.

The GR GT will also be Toyota’s first production model with a 4.0-liter V8 engine. The engines for these new cars are developed fully in-house.

Toyota’s sports car history dates back to the 2000GT of 1967, followed by the iconic 2010 Lexus LFA, which used a carbon-fiber frame and a 4.8-liter V10 engine. Unlike previous models, which involved Yamaha, the new engines are entirely Toyota’s work.

Automakers are facing pressure as EVs and affordable new-energy vehicles in China make the global market more competitive. Toyoda said cars risk becoming commodities if brands do not focus on unique performance and identity.

Toyota remains the top-ranked automaker in Interbrand’s Best Global Brands 2025 list. The company is now looking to grow further in the ultra-luxury market.

It recently redefined the Century as a standalone luxury brand to compete with Rolls-Royce and Bentley.

Toyota’s Chief Branding Officer Simon Humphries called the new cars the “sports car apex” for both Lexus and GR. The models will target high-end rivals such as the Porsche 911 and Mercedes-AMG, which start around USD 200,000.

Toyota also wants to strengthen its presence in motorsports. This year, the company entered the Nurburgring 24-hour endurance race for the first time with the GR Yaris.
