KATHMANDU: The Bagmati Province Government has made embossed number plates mandatory for all motor vehicles registered in the province.
The announcement was made through the budget for fiscal year 2025/26 presented in the Bagmati Province Assembly on Sunday.
“To ensure proper identification and enhance the security of vehicles, the installation of embossed number plates will be made compulsory for all registered vehicles,” the budget statement reads.
Until now, the use of embossed number plates in the province was required only for newly registered vehicles or those undergoing ownership transfer. With this new policy, the rule will apply to all vehicles, regardless of their registration date.
Although the federal government initiated the embossed plate system in 2017, only around 71,000 vehicles across the country have been fitted with the plates so far.
However, questions have been raised over the implementation of the policy. This is because similar announcements made in the past have gone unimplemented. Although the federal government initiated the embossed plate system in 2017, only around 71,000 vehicles across the country have been fitted with the plates so far. Out of two million registered motor vehicles in the province, only 58,415 are fitted with embossed plates.
Cost of Installation
The Department of Transport Management has set varying fees for embossed plate depending on vehicle types. While two-wheelers are charged Rs 2,500 for embossed plates, three-wheelers will have to pay Rs 2,900.
Similarly, a fee of Rs 3,200 has been sex for small and medium four-wheelers, while large vehicles are required to pay Rs 3,600.
