KATHMANDU: The Language Commission has called for embossed number plates on vehicles to be written in Nepali.
The Commission cited Article 7, Clause 1 of the Constitution, which states that Nepali is the language of government work. It objected to the provision allowing number plates in English.
It also reminded that both the Constitution and the Supreme Court have directed the use of Nepali, not any unrecognized language or script, for number plates.
In its decision on June 23, 2025, the Supreme Court clarified that Article 7, Clause 3 gives the Government authority to decide language matters based on the Commission’s recommendation. All levels of government are required to follow this.
Fulfilling its responsibility, the Language Commission has once again asked the Government to ensure that electronic code numbers are printed in Devanagari script, in line with its decision of August 17.
