KATHMANDU: BYD’s new entry model, the Atto 1, has entered the Nepali market as a compact hatchback offering a strong mix of range, performance, and design.
Despite its size, nearly that of a sub-four-meter SUV, the model has gained popularity globally for its smart looks and driving efficiency.
During a recent test drive from Jarsingh Pauwa to Shivapuri National Park, the Atto 1 demonstrated notable uphill performance. Even with a full load of five passengers, the vehicle maintained smooth power delivery, comparable to a 100-kW SUV.

The car’s main strength is its driving feel. Though it’s a hatchback, the Atto 1 drives much like a compact SUV. The top variant, with a claimed range of 300 kilometers (WLTP), covered 100 kilometers using only 31 percent battery even with five people onboard.
Its 45 kW motor provides smooth and strong performance, making it a solid competitor in its class. The vehicle also reaffirms BYD’s proven battery technology, known for stability and efficiency.
Cabin and comfort
The Atto 1 offers a surprisingly spacious interior. Though compact from the outside, its flat-floor layout ensures ample legroom for both front and rear passengers. To increase rear space, however, boot capacity has been slightly reduced.

The center console and dashboard are neatly integrated, with practical storage options under the console and within the glove box and doors. Two large cup holders and premium seat materials enhance cabin comfort.
Rear passengers, however, may notice the absence of dedicated AC vents and mobile charging ports, which can delay cooling and convenience.
Exterior design
Globally, the Atto 1 has received positive feedback for its smart, urban design. Its projector headlamps, positioned between LED daytime running lights, and the connected rear tail lamp give the car a modern and distinctive look.

Design features like body cladding, a sporty bumper, a spoiler, high brake light, and 16-inch alloy wheels give the car a strong look. Its 175 mm ground clearance works well for both city and semi-rural roads.
Pricing and variants
The Atto 1 is available in two variants through Cimex Inc., the authorized distributor of BYD vehicles in Nepal. The entry variant is priced at Rs 2.895 million, while the top variant tested is available for Rs 3.299 million.

Verdict
For those looking for a compact electric hatchback that balances practicality, power, and reliability, the BYD Atto 1 is a solid choice. It comes with six airbags and essential safety features. While it doesn’t have a 360-degree camera, BYD’s reputation, Cimex’s service network, and competitive pricing make the Atto 1 a strong option in Nepal’s growing EV market.
