KATHMANDU: Daihatsu Motor has introduced electric versions of its mini commercial vans, the e-Hijet Cargo and e-Atrai, offering a claimed driving range of 257 km, the highest in Japan’s mini commercial EV segment, according to Nikkei Asia.
The launch marks Daihatsu’s entry into a market already occupied by Mitsubishi, Nissan, and Honda, after delays caused by earlier safety testing issues.
The EVs feature a large-capacity battery integrated without reducing cabin space and come with fast charging as standard. Developed jointly with Toyota and Suzuki, production will take place in Oita Prefecture, with a monthly sales target of 300 units.
The e-Atrai is positioned as the premium variant, offering power-assisted sliding doors on both sides, while both models share the same powertrain and range.
Prices start at USD 20,000, making them the most expensive in the segment, a premium Daihatsu attributes to the larger battery and standard fast-charging equipment.
Government EV subsidies are expected to help support demand. Mini commercial vehicles account for around half of Daihatsu’s total sales, and the company said longer driving range was a key priority in developing its first mini commercial EVs.
