KATHMANDU: Foton is not a new brand in Nepal. Known for its commercial vehicles, including pickups and vans, the Chinese automaker has built a strong presence in the country through its authorized distributor MAW Vriddhi.

Foton has emerged as a strong contender in the pickup segment, with earlier models such as the Tunland E and E Plus. Now, it has introduced its latest offering, the Foton Tunland G7, with the tagline ‘Built for the Himalayas’, strengthening its position further in the market.

Driving Experience
I recently drove the Tunland G7 from Kathmandu to Panchase, Kaski, and the experience was surprisingly smooth and confident. The test vehicle was the top variant equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine and an automatic transmission. Its peak torque of 390 Nm provided me with ample power on both uphill climbs and downhill descents.

The 225 mm ground clearance handled rough terrain with ease, while the 4×4 drivetrain made it feel ready for Nepal’s rugged terrains. The pickup’s handling stood out for its ease and comfort. This is not something you always expect from a commercial vehicle.

Cabin and Features
The G7’s cabin is well-equipped and comfortable. It gives the feel of a premium SUV rather than a utility truck. It comes with dual 12.3-inch digital screens, sunroof, push-start button, automatic air conditioning and electrically adjustable seats

On the safety front, it offers dual airbags, ABS with EBD, hill hold assist, hill descent control and electronic differential lock, which makes the cabin both safe and upmarket.

Fuel Efficiency
One of the most impressive aspects of the G7 was its fuel economy. It challenged the notion that pickups are fuel-hungry vehicles. The G7 comes equipped with a large 80-liter diesel tank. On this trip from Kathmandu to Panchase and back (about 450 km), the vehicle consumed only around 45 liters of fuel, even with the AC running throughout the journey. An average of close to 10 km per liter is highly commendable for a full-size 4×4 pickup.

Verdict
The Foton Tunland G7 is a surprisingly refined pickup truck. Costing Rs 5.199 million for the entry variant and Rs 7.199 lakh for the top variant, it offers excellent value for buyers looking for both utility and comfort. With a payload capacity of up to 1,000 kg and off-road capabilities, it is not just a workhorse but also a lifestyle vehicle well-suited for Nepal’s diverse terrain.

If you are looking for a stylish and capable pickup that can handle tough roads and still feel like an SUV inside, the Tunland G7 could be a strong option for you.
