KATHMANDU: Hyundai has reclaimed the top spot in Nepal’s passenger car market after three years.
The local dealer of the South Korean automakers imported 1,270 units of Hyundai passenger cars into Nepal between January and mid-August, according to the data provided by the Department of Customs.
Chinese automaker BYD was next with 1,173 units imported during the period, slightly ahead of MG which imported 1,160 units which also included 10 units of IM6.
Tata, however, tops the segment with total imports of 1,662 units if the import figure of Xpres-T, which is primarily used as taxis, is also counted.
Tata secured fourth place with 906 passenger cars imported over the eight and half months of 2025. However, if the 756 units of the Xpres-T EV, primarily used as taxis in Nepal, are included, Tata surpasses all three brands in total imports with 1,662 units.
Dongfeng Nammi ranked fifth with 667 units.
Other brands such as Suzuki, Deepal, Leapmotor, Omoda/Jaecoo and Kia also recorded notable imports, though their volumes remain far behind the leading four.
