KATHMANDU: Hyundai Creta has long been the top choice in the mid-size SUV segment—not only in India but also in Nepal.
The Creta has maintained its dominance due to its well-balanced design, strong performance and high resale value despite the arrival of numerous competitors over the years.
The segment is set for another shake-up, with Maruti Suzuki, Renault and Nissan all are working on their mid-size SUV to take on Creta, as per Indian media reports. Since all these brands are present in Nepal, these new models will also arrive in Nepal after their India launch.
Despite the dominance of Chinese electric vehicles (EV) in the Nepali market, the internal combustion engine (ICE) SUVs are popular on Nepali roads due to the country’s mountainous terrain and challenging road conditions.
Here is a quick look at these upcoming models:
Maruti Suzuki’s New Midsize SUV
Maruti Suzuki is preparing to launch a brand-new midsize SUV that will be sold through its Arena dealership network. Expected to be a five-seater, the SUV will directly compete with the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. It may share components with the Grand Vitara and is expected to appeal to a broad customer base.
Next-Gen Renault Duster
Renault is set to reintroduce one of its most iconic models, the Duster, in an all-new avatar. Built on the CMF-B modular platform, widely used in Europe, the next-gen Duster will be tailored to meet Indian driving needs. It is expected to launch in late 2025 or early 2026.
The new model will likely feature two turbo-petrol engine options, along with both manual and automatic transmission choices.
The Renault Duster was liked in Nepal for its rugged styling, off-road capability, and availability in both petrol and diesel variants. If the updated model builds on these strengths, it could once again enjoy similar success in Nepal.
Nissan’s Upcoming C-Segment SUV
Nissan is also set to enter the midsize SUV space with a new model reportedly inspired by its flagship Patrol SUV.
The new offering will feature modern styling, high ground clearance, and a spacious interior. A three-row, seven-seater variant is also expected.
The car is likely to share its platform with he new Renault Duster and offer premium features such as a large touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, six airbags, panoramic sunroof and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
In Nepal, Nissan has seen success with models like the Kicks and Magnite and Terrano. The arrival of the new SUV its bolster its presence in the market.
Implications for the Nepali Market
All these automakers—Maruti Suzuki, Renault and Nissan—have a strong presence in Nepal’s SUV segment. Suzuki’s Brezza and Grand Vitara, Renault’s Duster, and Nissan’s Kicks and Magnite are already familiar sights on Nepali roads.
However, competing with the Hyundai Creta will not be an easy task. The Creta enjoys a solid brand image, benefits from local assembly in Nepal, which makes the car more affordable, and holds excellent resale value compared to other models. These advantages make Creta a tough contender to beat in its segment. Nonetheless, the arrival of these new models could inject fresh excitement into the market which is always looking for feature-rich, stylish and affordable vehicles.
