KATHMANDU: Chinese automaker Chery has officially taken over Nissan’s former vehicle manufacturing plant in Rosslyn, South Africa. The company plans to start local vehicle production by the middle of 2027 after upgrading the facility, according to Reuters.

The acquisition, first announced in January, marks a major step in Chery’s global expansion strategy. The company said it aims to establish South Africa as its African hub for manufacturing, exports, research and development, and regional operations.

Chery confirmed it will retain all 692 employees currently working at the Rosslyn plant. The project is also expected to create nearly 3,000 direct and indirect jobs across manufacturing, supply chains, and related services.

The automaker plans to invest millions of dollars to modernize the factory and install new production equipment before operations begin. During the initial production ramp-up in the third and fourth quarters of 2027, the plant is expected to build around 15,000 vehicles.

Production will initially focus on the Jetour T series, including the T1, Jaecoo J5, and Chery Tiggo 4 SUVs. The Jaecoo J5 will be offered with both internal combustion and new energy powertrains.

Chery has also launched a localization program targeting 40 percent local content in the first phase of production. The company is evaluating local suppliers while planning to bring additional component suppliers from China, particularly for electric vehicles and intelligent driving technologies.

The Chinese automaker has set a long-term goal of transforming the Rosslyn facility into a full automotive hub with research and development, supply chain operations, and training centers. It also aims to exceed 100,000 annual vehicle sales in the South African market.
