KATHMANDU: MG, the SAIC-owned passenger car brand with British origins, is preparing to release 13 new energy vehicles globally within the next two years, states Chinese media.

The company has announced an investment of USD 1.4 billion to support this plan.

The upcoming lineup will include battery electric vehicles (BEVs), extended range electric vehicles (EREVs) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs). MG says the focus will not be on offering the lowest prices but on advanced technology and reliable supply chains from its parent company SAIC.

According to MG’s General Manager Chen Cui, the brand aims to strengthen its position in the new energy vehicle segment. SAIC, which acquired MG in 2005, is already involved in joint EV projects with Audi and Huawei.

MG also plans to promote smart connectivity features in partnership with Oppo and work on semi-solid state battery technology. The company has set a goal to become a leading global Chinese new energy brand.

The first model under this strategy is the MG4 electric hatchback. Presales began in China on August 5, with the official launch scheduled for August 29.

A version of the MG4 equipped with a semi-solid state battery is expected to hit the market by the end of the year.
