KATHMANDU: Chinese electric vehicle brand Skywell is set for a fresh start in Nepal after struggling to gain momentum over the past three years. The company has appointed a new official distributor following weak sales and a halt in imports.
Skywell entered Nepal through G Motors, an experienced automobile distributor. However, despite the company’s experience, the brand failed to establish itself in the market, leading to the end of its partnership with the Chinese automaker.
In FY 2023/24, Nepal imported 41 Skywell EVs, including 32 units of the ET5 and nine units of the BE11. The ET5 was launched at Rs. 11.5 million, making it one of the more expensive electric SUVs in the market.
Imports increased to 80 units of the BE11 in FY 2024/25, but no new Skywell vehicles have been brought into Nepal since then.
The brand’s slow performance appears to be linked more to its pricing and limited market presence than to its products. Buyers in the premium EV segment usually value brand reputation, after-sales service, spare parts availability and resale value, areas where newer brands often face challenges.
Skywell has now appointed LRR Group as its new authorised distributor in Nepal. The company is expected to relaunch the brand with a new market strategy.
Nepal’s EV market is becoming increasingly competitive, with buyers paying close attention not only to design and technology but also to price, driving range, charging support, service network and ownership costs. As a result, a strong product alone is no longer enough. Brands also need competitive pricing and reliable after-sales support to succeed.
Skywell’s journey highlights how quickly Nepal’s EV market is evolving. Whether the brand can make a successful comeback under its new distributor will depend on how well it meets changing customer expectations.
