KATHMANDU: Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) plans to increase its annual production capacity to 8 million two-wheelers by 2028. The company aims to make India a key global manufacturing and export hub for its two-wheeler business.
According to Tsutsumu Otani, President and CEO of HMSI, the company plans to increase production capacity at its four manufacturing facilities in India from the current 6.25 million units to 8 million units annually.
The expansion is intended to meet growing domestic demand and increase exports to emerging markets. Honda is targeting markets in Africa, Central America and South America.
Honda is already exporting the CB350 motorcycle from India to Europe. The company is also evaluating the export potential of the CB500.
The company plans to increase local sourcing of components under India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. Higher localization could help reduce production costs, improve pricing and make its products more competitive in international markets.
Honda is also looking to meet changing consumer preferences in India. As buyers increasingly consider premium motorcycles and scooters, the company plans to strengthen its RedWing and BigWing retail and customer service networks.
The planned expansion could also support Honda’s efforts to strengthen its position in the electric two-wheeler segment, where it faces competition from established players. The company is looking to offer a broader portfolio covering internal combustion engine (ICE), electric and flex-fuel models.
