KATHMANDU: European automobile Stellantis has announced the launch of its electric vehicle brand Leapmotor in India.
The move is aimed at strengthening Stellantis’ footprint in one of the world’s fastest-growing automotive markets.
Stellantis currently owns 14 major automobile brands. Among them, Jeep and Citroen, which are manufactured in India, are already available in Nepal.
Shangrila Motors Pvt Ltd is the authorized distributor of Leapmotor and Citroen in Nepal.
Leapmotor International is a joint venture formed in 2024 by Stellantis and China-based Leapmotor. Stellantis holds a 20% equity stake in Leapmotor and a 51% share in Leapmotor International, giving it strategic influence and control in the brand’s global expansion.
The partnership aims at bringing smart and sustainable electric vehicles to markets outside China, including South Asia.
With Leapmotor already gaining momentum in Nepal through models like the C10 SUV and T03 hatchback, its expansion into India could lead to more competitive pricing and broader regional availability. Local manufacturing or assembly, similar to how MG operates in South Asia, can further enhance affordability.
The recent launch of the mid-size hatchback B10 in China signals potential additions to its lineup in the region.
The plan to expand into India is a part of Stellantis’ strategy to focus on electric vehicles and grow its presence in the Indian and South Asian markets.
