KATHMANDU: The Department of Transport Management has directed all public transport operators to mandatorily provide a 45% fare discount to students.
The department issued a formal notice to the Federation of Nepal National Transport Entrepreneurs, the Central Federation of Public Transport, and Sajha Yatayat Cooperative Limited, instructing them to implement the legally provisioned student concession.
The provision dates back to an agreement reached on March 3, 2009, between the government and transport operators, which mandates a 45% fare discount for students in public vehicles.
However, the department said complaints have recently increased, with some operators refusing to offer the discount or mistreating students, citing rising fuel prices.
In the notice, the department stated that multiple grievances have been received through government platforms such as Hello Sarkar and complaint channels, indicating that the mandated student concession is not being properly implemented.
It has urged all operators to strictly enforce the provision and ensure students receive the entitled fare discount.
