KATHMANDU: The next-generation Toyota Fortuner has been spotted testing for the first time. The SUV was seen undergoing road tests in Thailand, according to local media reports.

Toyota is preparing to introduce the new Fortuner globally by the end of this year. The development follows the launch of the next-generation Toyota Hilux pickup last year.

The upcoming Fortuner will use the same Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle (IMV) platform as the Hilux. The ladder-frame platform has been updated to support multiple powertrain options. These may include hybrid, hydrogen fuel cell, and fully electric systems.

The spy image shows the rear section of the SUV. The test vehicle is covered in heavy camouflage, but some design details are visible.

The new Fortuner appears to feature slim wraparound LED taillights. They may be connected by a full-width LED light bar. The SUV also shows a slightly sloping roofline towards the rear.

Other visible updates include a redesigned tailgate, new rear bumper, and a shark fin antenna. At the front, the design is expected to resemble the Hilux. It may include a large upright grille and slim LED headlamps.

Inside, the new Fortuner is expected to get dual 12.3-inch displays. One will serve as the digital instrument cluster, while the other will be the touchscreen infotainment system.

Expected features include electrically adjustable and ventilated front seats, automatic climate control, wireless charging, a 360-degree camera system, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) aimed at enhancing safety and driving convenience.

Under the hood, the SUV is expected to offer a 2.7-liter petrol engine and a 2.8-liter diesel engine. Both may be paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

Transmission options are likely to include a 6-speed manual and a torque-converter automatic gearbox.
