KATHMANDU: Chinese online leaks and forum posts suggest BYD is preparing a second-generation megawatt flash charging system with a peak output of up to 1,500 kW and 1,500 A; roughly 1.5 times the power of its first-generation charger from 2025.
The leaked specifications point to a maximum DC voltage of about 1,000 V and a 2,100 kW grid input capacity, which may help with power management and enable faster charging for high-voltage EVs.
According to Chinese tech bloggers, early information points to peak power levels of around 1,360 kW in real-world use, enabling 10C-plus charging. Under test conditions, the system is claimed to add up to 400 km of driving range in about five minutes. Compatibility is reportedly planned for BYD’s high-end models such as the Han and Tang.
Design details circulating online describe a T-shaped dual-gun cabinet, liquid-cooled cables, intelligent power distribution, and increased onboard energy storage compared to the first generation, allowing a single station to serve more vehicles in succession.
BYD’s first megawatt charger supported 1,000 kW and 1,000 A and has been deployed widely across China. Reports also mention potential upgrades for existing stations to 500 kW ultra-fast chargers and a lower-power 200-600 kW version for broader vehicle support.
An official BYD confirmation of the 1,500 kW charger, its full specs, supported models, and rollout schedule has not yet been released.
