KATHMANDU: Three Democratic senators; Tammy Baldwin, Elissa Slotkin, and Chuck Schumer, have urged President Donald Trump to prevent Chinese automakers from building vehicles in the United States, according to Reuters.
In a letter, the lawmakers warned that allowing Chinese firms to set up factories in the US could create a major economic imbalance and raise national security risks. They also called for blocking Chinese-made vehicles assembled in Mexico or Canada from entering the US market.
The push comes despite existing barriers, including tariffs of around 100% on Chinese vehicles. However, recent surveys indicate growing US consumer interest in affordable Chinese EVs.
The White House said the administration remains focused on boosting domestic investment but will not compromise on national security.
Earlier, the administration had imposed strict regulations in 2025 effectively banning Chinese passenger vehicles over data security concerns. The move has strong support from US automakers and industry groups.
The senators also urged the government to classify companies like BYD as military-linked entities, citing security concerns.
Meanwhile, China has criticized US policies as protectionist, accusing Washington of creating barriers for Chinese automakers.
