KATHMANDU: The government has increased public transport fares across Nepal. The decision was made by the Department of Transport Management after approval from the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport.

The revision is based on rising fuel prices and analysis of key indicators. The highest increase is seen in hill cargo transport, where fares have gone up by 21.68 percent.

Passenger vehicle fares have increased by 16.71 percent. Cargo transport in the Terai region has seen a 15.75 percent rise.

Transport operators had been demanding fare revision due to rising fuel costs. Fuel prices have increased sharply in the past month amid tensions in the Middle East.

According to Nepal Oil Corporation, diesel prices have increased by Rs 40 per liter and petrol by Rs 45 per liter within one month.

The corporation stated it is still facing losses of Rs 120 per liter on diesel and Rs 34 per liter on petrol.

Even though the government has increased public transport fares, the change will not apply to electric vehicles.
