KATHMANDU: The government has moved forward with plans to operate ‘Blue Bus’ services across all seven provinces to provide safer and easier public transportation for women.

The initiative is part of the government’s 100-day action plan led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah. The program aims to ensure safe, convenient, and respectful mobility for women through free public bus services.

According to the approved action plan on March 27, 2026, the government targets operating at least 25 Blue Buses within the first phase. The plan includes operating buses in Kathmandu Valley in coordination with Sajha Yatayat and outside the valley through cooperation with transport operators.

The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure Development said it plans to operate at least seven Blue Buses in Kathmandu Valley with support from Sajha Yatayat.

Similarly, at least 18 buses will be operated outside Kathmandu Valley through coordination with transport associations in all provinces.

The ministry said Sajha Yatayat has already submitted a draft proposal including operational procedures, route plans, cost estimates, and responsibilities for the Blue Bus service. Necessary administrative and technical preparations are currently underway.

The government plans to gradually expand the Blue Bus service by prioritizing the safety of women and girls in public transportation. The required budget and programs for operating the service in all seven provinces have also been proposed for the fiscal year 2026/27.

The service is expected to benefit women commuters, including students, workers, and employees, by providing a safer and more convenient travel environment.
