KATHMANDU: The Delhi government has approved the Delhi EV Policy 2026, which will require only electric two-wheelers to be registered in the city from April 1, 2028.

The new policy will come into effect from July 1, 2026, and will remain active until March 31, 2030. It introduces a phased transition plan to promote electric mobility across different vehicle categories.

Under the policy, electric vehicles will receive priority registration as Delhi moves towards cleaner transportation.

The policy sets different deadlines for vehicle categories. Only electric auto-rickshaws and N1 goods carriers will be registered from January 1, 2027.

For two-wheelers, only new electric two-wheelers will be eligible for registration from April 1, 2028.

The policy includes purchase incentives to encourage EV adoption. Electric two-wheeler buyers can receive incentives of up to Rs. 30,000.

Similarly, incentives of up to Rs. 50,000 are available for electric three-wheelers, while electric N1 goods vehicles can receive benefits of up to Rs. 1 million.

The policy also provides scrappage incentives ranging from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 1 million for replacing older polluting vehicles with electric alternatives. The incentives will be transferred directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts.

Delhi has also set a target to install more than 30,000 EV charging points across the city to support the growing number of electric vehicles.

The new two-wheeler registration rule is expected to accelerate EV adoption in Delhi. Industry estimates suggest the policy could increase the share of electric two-wheelers in total sales and encourage other states to introduce similar measures.
