KATHMANDU: Nepal’s electric vehicle (EV) market is preparing to enter a new phase of competition as new brands and models are set to enter the market. With both new and existing companies preparing launches, EV buyers will soon have more choices across different price segments.
Several companies are targeting the upcoming NAIMA Mobility Expo and NADA Auto Show to introduce new electric cars. The biggest competition is expected in the Rs. 3 million to Rs. 5 million price range.
Currently, EV models priced between Rs. 3 million and Rs. 8 million have a strong presence in the Nepali market. As premium EV prices have started moving above Rs. 10 million, most companies are now focusing on the mid-range segment.
Competition heats up in the Rs 3-4 million EV segment
The Rs. 3 million to Rs. 4 million segment is expected to see the highest competition. Several new models are being prepared for launch in this category.
Models including Volkswagen ID. Wuling Binguo EV, Tata Punch EV, Arcfox T1, Proton e.MAS 5 and Chery QQ3 are expected to enter the market targeting customers looking for affordable EVs with good range and features.

More rivals entering Rs 4-5 million segment
The Rs. 4 million to Rs. 5 million segment, which currently has strong demand for electric SUVs, is also expected to see new arrivals.
Currently, models such as BYD Atto 2, MG S5 EV, Nammi VIGO and Omoda E5 are competing in this category.
New models including Omoda O4, Changan Nevo Q05 and Leapmotor A10 are also being prepared for launch. Their arrival is expected to increase competition in the segment.

Above Rs 5 Million, More EV Options on the Way
Competition will also continue in the Rs. 5 million to Rs. 7 million segments. Models like Tata Sierra EV, Wuling Eksion and MG Starline are expected to enter the market.
In the premium segment above Rs. 7 million, companies are preparing models such as Avatr 07, Zeekr 7X, BYD Atto 3 and iCAUR V27.

Automakers gear up for aggressive pricing war
With major auto shows approaching, companies are preparing aggressive pricing strategies to attract customers. Importers are focusing on competitive pricing to increase their market share.
Industry observers expect price competition among EV brands as more companies enter the market.
“Competition will be high in the Rs. 2 million to Rs. 7 million segment. Companies are ready to offer vehicles with lower margins to increase market share. This will directly benefit customers, although there could be challenges in after-sales service,” said an importer.
Analysts believe companies will have limited room to maintain high profit margins due to rising competition. The increasing number of options is expected to benefit EV buyers.

All eyes on auto shows as buyers wait
The NAIMA Nepal Mobility Expo will be held at Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu from August 11. Around two dozen four-wheeler brands are expected to participate in the event.
Brands including MG, Tata, Omoda, iCAUR, Hyundai, Kaiyi, Arcfox, Mahindra, Toyota, Kia, Leapmotor, Proton, Zeekr, Nissan and Wuling are preparing new launches.
Some new brands have also booked exhibition stalls without officially announcing their names.

Companies are expected to offer discounts, financing schemes and exchange offers along with new models. The promotional activities are likely to continue until the Dashain-Tihar festive season.
The NADA Auto Show will also be held at Bhrikutimandap from August 25, a few weeks after the Nepal Mobility Expo. Around 17 to 18 four-wheeler brands are expected to participate.
Many customers are currently delaying their vehicle purchase decisions and waiting for the auto show. Like previous years, buyers are expecting new models, attractive offers and competitive prices during the exhibition.
