KATHMANDU: Electric SUVs have been getting most of the attention in Nepal’s automobile market lately. However, there is still demand for premium SUVs powered by petrol and hybrid technology. Four-wheel-drive lifestyle SUVs also have a strong appeal, especially among buyers looking for more than just everyday mobility.
The BAIC BJ30e is one such SUV. Laxmi Motor Hub has started selling the model in Nepal after its entry at the NAIMA Mobility Expo on August 11.
With its boxy design, four-wheel-drive system, hybrid technology and off-road capability, the BJ30e has quickly created a distinct identity in the market. It is priced at around Rs. 12 million, which makes it an interesting option in its segment.
When its design, features, off-road ability and hybrid powertrain are considered together, the BJ30e offers a competitive package at this price. Its combination of modern technology, luxury and practicality makes it a distinctive lifestyle SUV in the Nepali market.
Strong bookings at NAIMA Mobility Expo
Despite its price of more than Rs. 10 million, the BJ30e received a good response at the NAIMA Mobility Expo, according to the company.

The company has not disclosed the exact number of bookings received during the expo. However, the next two to three months will give a clearer picture of how many bookings turn into actual sales.
The success of the BJ30e will also depend on how well Nepali customers understand and accept its four-wheel-drive system and hybrid technology.
Engine and performance
The BJ30e comes with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine paired with a hybrid system. BAIC describes it as an off-road SUV featuring its ‘Magic Core Hybrid’ technology.
According to the company, the SUV can travel around 1,000 km on a 51-liter fuel tank. However, it will be interesting to see how this claimed range translates to Nepali roads, traffic conditions and driving habits.
The BJ30e also has a 215mm ground clearance, which is useful for Nepal’s varied road conditions. Its 25-degree approach angle and 30-degree departure angle can help it perform better on rural roads and off-road trails.
For buyers planning to travel to hilly, mountainous and remote areas, the four-wheel-drive system could be one of its biggest attractions.

Features designed for off-road driving
BAIC has equipped the BJ30e with several features designed to make off-road driving easier. The instrument cluster can display information such as slope angle, pitch, altitude, tire pressure and compass direction.
When driving through water, the SUV’s wading mode can also show the water level in real time. The cabin is another highlight of the BJ30e. It features a large 14.6-inch infotainment screen, an 8-speaker audio system, a wireless charger and premium leather seats.
For safety, the SUV gets eight airbags, a 360-degree camera, parking sensors and ADAS.
