KATHMANDU: The Government of Delhi has announced strict enforcement against end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) operating in the city. According to a public notice issued by the Delhi Transport Department, older petrol and diesel vehicles found operating or parked in public places will be impounded and sent for scrapping without further notice.
Under current rules, BS-III or older vehicles, diesel vehicles older than 10 years, and petrol vehicles older than 15 years are classified as end-of-life vehicles.
Authorities have advised owners of such vehicles to remove them from the roads. Owners who wish to relocate their vehicles outside the National Capital Region (NCR) can do so by obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the transport authority.
To enforce the rule, the department has deployed automated number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras to identify end-of-life vehicles on the road.
Meanwhile, the Delhi government has approached the Supreme Court of India seeking a revision in the ELV classification system so that vehicles can be assessed based on actual emission levels rather than age alone.
