KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu District Administration Office has announced an indefinite curfew within the Kathmandu Ring Road.
The curfew began at 8:30 AM today and will remain in effect until further notice.
According to Chief District Officer Chhabi Lal Rijal, the curfew covers the entire area inside the Ring Road, including the stretch from Bal Kumari Bridge to Koteshwar Chowk, Sinamangal, Gaushala, Chabahil, Narayan Gopal Chowk, Gongabu, Balaju, Swayambhu, Kalanki, Balkhu and up to the Bagmati River Bridge.
Meanwhile, the Lalitpur District Administration has imposed a curfew until midnight.
This decision follows Monday’s “Gen Z” protest, during which 19 people were killed and more than 400 injured due to a heavy police crackdown.
As a result, the streets of Kathmandu Valley appeared deserted from early Tuesday morning. Before the curfew began, only a few vehicles were seen on the roads inside the Ring Road, while traffic was slightly heavier outside the Ring Road.
According to the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police, no traffic obstructions were reported on the roads until 8 AM Tuesday. However, the number of vehicles on the roads remains very low.
With the curfew in effect, public movement and vehicle traffic have been restricted. However, certain essential services will continue to operate during this period.
According to the Kathmandu District Administration Office, vehicles used for essential services, including ambulances, fire trucks and hearses, vehicles carrying healthcare workers, journalists, human rights officials and diplomatic personnel will be permitted to operate.
The administration stated that security personnel will assist air passengers with their travel if they present valid flight tickets.
