KATHMANDU: After reaching its 20% ethanol blending target, the Indian government is now moving towards a 27% blend in petrol. A new fuel, E27, is being developed, India media reports.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has been asked to urgently draft specifications for E27. Meanwhile, the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) will study necessary engine changes to support the higher ethanol content.
This step is part of India’s push to cut fuel imports and boost domestic ethanol production.
In parallel, BIS has also been directed to create standards for blending 10% isobutanol (IBA) with diesel, a potential new biofuel.
The Indian Ministry of Road Transport has issued draft rules asking automakers to produce vehicles that can run on 100% ethanol (E100) and has invited public feedback.
