KATHMANDU: India has proposed new rules to allow vehicles to use higher ethanol-blended fuels such as E85 and E100. The move is aimed at reducing dependence on imported petroleum products.
India’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a draft notification to amend the Central Motor Vehicles Rules. The proposal includes provisions for E85 fuel, which contains 85 percent ethanol and petrol, and E100, which allows vehicles to run on nearly pure ethanol.
The draft rules have been opened for public feedback. The government will take a final decision after reviewing comments.
India achieved its target of 20 percent ethanol blending (E20) in petrol in 2025. The country is now looking to increase blending levels further as part of its energy strategy.
