KATHMANDU: BYD has reached a new milestone by producing its 13 millionth new energy vehicle (NEV). This comes just eight months after the company made its 10 millionth NEV, according to Chinese media.

The 13 millionth vehicle is a U7 sedan from Yangwang, BYD’s ultra-luxury sub-brand. BYD announced the update today on Weibo, a Chinese social media platform.

BYD started in February 1995 with just about 20 employees. By the end of 2024, it had grown into one of China’s biggest carmakers, employing over 968,000 people.

The company began as a battery maker and entered the auto industry in 2003 after acquiring Qinchuan, a company based in Xi’an.

In May 2021, BYD became the first Chinese automaker to produce 1 million NEVs. It stopped making traditional fuel-only cars in March 2022 and now focuses only on electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

BYD reached its 5 millionth NEV on August 9, 2023, and its 10 millionth on November 18, 2024. BYD is entering the high-end market, led by its premium sub-brand Yangwang.

As of April 2025, BYD’s new energy vehicles are available in over 100 countries and regions around the world.

In Nepal, BYD is represented by its official distributor, Cimex Inc. The company offers several EV models including the Dolphin, Atto 3, Seal, Sealion and e6. Cimex also provides charging solutions and after-sales support across the country.
