KATHMANDU: Upgrade work on the Jomsom-Kagbeni road section under the Kali Gandaki Corridor has officially started. The Beni-Jomsom-Korala Road Project has begun improvement work on the 9-km Jomsom-Kagbeni section under an annual maintenance contract.

The project is being upgraded at an estimated cost of Rs 70 million. Although the road was blacktopped before 2019, several sections were damaged by floods and landslides over the years.

Parts of the road have subsided, drainage structures have been damaged, retaining walls have collapsed, and blacktop surfaces have peeled off in several areas.

Due to the deteriorating condition, authorities issued a new contract for the road upgrade. The contract was awarded to Kalimati-Thapakaji-Rasuwa JV Construction.

Korala Road Project Chief Tejaswi Sharma said the construction work started in the first week of May 2026 under a contract worth around Rs 70 million.

According to Sharma, the project aims to improve and preserve the black-topped road to ensure long-term connectivity to Korala border point. As per the agreement, the construction company must complete the project within four months, by August 31, 2026.

The upgrade work includes the construction of 1,800 cubic meters of gabion wall, 3,500 cubic meters of masonry wall, 200 cubic meters of plum concrete, and 900 cubic meters of RCC drainage structures along the 9-km road section.
