Kathmandu Metropolis sets fines for traffic violations

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City has introduced vehicle-related fines under its new Economic Act for the fiscal year 2025/26.

These fines are separate from the national Transport Management Act and apply specifically within the city.

Vehicles parked outside designated zones will face penalties based on their type: Rs. 1,000 for motorcycles and scooters, Rs. 2,500 for cars, jeeps, and delivery vans, Rs. 3,500 for minibuses and mini-trucks and Rs. 5,000 for large vehicles like buses and trucks.

Public transport vehicles that pick up or drop off passengers in undesignated areas will be fined Rs. 5,000.

Any vehicle found causing noise or air pollution will be fined Rs.1,000 each. Additionally, vehicles or individuals who litter the roads with soil, sand or mud could face a fine of up to Rs. 50,000.

Kathmandu Metropolitan City has also set a Rs. 500 fine for smoking in public places, including roads. The fine doubles with each repeat offense.
