KATHMANDU: Mercedes-AMG is preparing to launch a high-performance electric SUV-coupe in 2027, expanding its dedicated EV lineup. The upcoming model is expected to deliver around 1,000bhp and will become the third vehicle in AMG’s all-electric range, according to Autocar.
AMG CEO Michael Schiebe said the company plans to “double down” on SUVs, as they now account for more than half of the brand’s global sales. The new electric SUV-coupe will follow the same strategy AMG currently uses with the GLE 63 S SUV and GLE 63 S Coupe.
The upcoming model will be built on AMG’s new AMG.EA electric platform. It will share its technology with the electric SUV set to rival the Porsche Cayenne, which is scheduled to debut early next year, and the production version of the GT XX concept.
The GT XX will replace the current GT 4-Door Coupe and will be AMG’s first fully electric model.
The SUV-coupe will feature an 800V electrical system, a new round-cell battery pack, and a tri-motor setup with one motor at the front and two at the rear.
In the GT XX prototype, this system produced up to 1,341bhp, indicating strong performance potential for the new SUV.
The announcement also comes during a leadership change at AMG. Michael Schiebe will move to lead Mercedes-Benz’s Top End Vehicle Group, which includes Mercedes-Maybach and G-Class. Stefan Weckbach will take over as AMG CEO from July 1.
