KATHMANDU: The Government of Nepal has proposed allowing senior government officials to receive a monthly driver allowance if they choose to drive themselves instead of using an official driver.
The provision is included in the draft Vehicle Management Guidelines for Government Employees, 2083, prepared by the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers.
Under the proposal, the Chief Secretary, Secretaries, Joint Secretaries and officials of equivalent rank will be entitled to either a government driver or the option to drive their own personal or official vehicle.
Officials who opt to drive themselves will receive a monthly payment equivalent to the starting salary scale of a light vehicle driver. However, they will have to choose either the driver facility or the allowance, not both.
The draft also states that employees below the rank of Joint Secretary will not be eligible for a government driver facility under the proposed guidelines.
