KATHMANDU: Many features that were exclusive to luxury cars just four years ago are now available in regular, affordable models. Growing global competition, especially the rapid rise of Chinese car brands has pushed manufacturers to offer more technology across all segments. Most entry-level Indian cars in 2020 lacked even basic equipment like power windows or infotainment screens.

As Chinese manufacturers gained influence from 2023 onward, car features saw a major jump. Today, even models priced around Rs 2.5 million in Nepal offer ADAS, 360-degree cameras, and several premium technologies.

Carmakers are increasingly working on features apart from ADAS. Equipment once limited to premium cars, such as shark-fin antennas, head-up displays, and gesture controls is now common in ordinary cars. This shift has been driven by intense market competition and the growing production and use of electric vehicles.

Below are some key features that have become widely available in the past five years:

ADAS: Level 2 ADAS has become common for safety. Four years ago, ADAS-equipped cars in Nepal cost over a crore. Now, the feature is available in models priced between Rs 3–4 million.

360-degree camera & front parking sensors: Cars priced around Rs 2.5 million now offer a 360-degree surround-view camera, making parking easier in narrow spaces. More models also include front parking sensors.

Electric parking brake & auto hold: These features are now found even in small, affordable cars. Auto Hold, in particular, has become very popular in Kathmandu’s stop-and-go traffic.

Frameless doors: Once rare, frameless doors have become more common with the arrival of Chinese models. They are now available in vehicles priced around Rs 3–3.2 million.

Multiple screens: The use of digital screens has grown rapidly. Earlier, large screens were offered only in expensive cars; now, manufacturers compete on screen size and number, even in mid-range models.

Leatherette seats: Leatherette upholstery is now available in cars starting from Rs 2 million. It is mainly made from materials like Synthetic leather or PU.

Welcome seats & gesture control: Features once unimaginable in low-priced cars, such as hands-free boot opening, gesture-based controls for photos and music, and seats that automatically adjust when the driver enters are now available in models priced between Rs 2–5 million.

Overall, rapid advancements and competitive pricing have made modern cars more feature-rich than ever, bringing luxury-like technology within reach for a wider range of Nepali buyers.
