KATHMANDU: Electric vehicle maker Polestar will no longer be able to sell new vehicles in the United States from the 2027 model year due to its Chinese ownership links, the company announced.
Polestar said the US Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security denied its authorization to sell vehicles under the Connected Vehicle Rule. The regulation restricts connected vehicle manufacturers linked to China or Russia over national security concerns.
Swedish EV brand Polestar is owned mainly by Chinese automaker Geely and its chairman Li Shufu. The company said none of its current US models are built in China. The Polestar 3 is produced in South Carolina, while the Polestar 4 is manufactured in South Korea.
The company will continue selling existing inventory of the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 in the US and will maintain customer support services. However, Polestar plans to focus future growth on Europe, where most of its sales are currently concentrated.
The move highlights increasing restrictions on Chinese-linked automotive companies in the US EV market.
