KATHMANDU: The electric SUV market in Nepal is becoming more competitive, especially in the Rs 4 million to Rs 6 million price range. Buyers now have multiple options with different designs, features, and driving ranges.

Chery Group’s Omoda E5 Pro was launched in Nepal last month. Distributed by SPG Automobiles, the SUV was introduced at Rs 5.199 million and was available at a limited-time price of Rs 4.999 million.

Meanwhile, Great Wall Motor has also started selling its new electric SUV, GWM Ora 5, in Nepal. The SUV is available in two variants through VG Impex, priced at Rs 4.699 million and Rs 5.199 million.

The top variants of the Omoda E5 Pro and Ora 5 are positioned at a similar price point. Here is how they compare.

Battery and range

The Omoda E5 Pro comes with a 50.7 kWh battery pack. It offers a WLTP-rated range of 350 km on a single charge. During local test drives, the SUV delivered more than 320 km of range in Nepal’s road conditions.

The Ora 5 gets a larger 58.3 kWh battery pack. It claims a WLTP range of 435 km. The model has not yet been tested under Nepal’s driving conditions.

Different design approach

The Omoda E5 Pro focuses on a sporty and futuristic design. It features a coupe-style profile, sharp front design, and aerodynamic body shape.

The Ora 5 follows a different design language. It gets a rounded headlamp setup, smooth body lines, and a retro-inspired look. The design gives it a unique identity among electric SUVs currently available in Nepal.

Size and ground clearance

The Omoda E5 Pro offers 191 mm of ground clearance, while the Ora 5 comes with 200 mm. The Ora 5 has an advantage in this area for Nepal’s road conditions.

The Ora 5 measures 4,471 mm in length with a 2,720 mm wheelbase. The Omoda E5 Pro measures 4,424 mm in length with a 2,630 mm wheelbase.

Interior and features

The Omoda E5 Pro focuses on a premium cabin experience. It comes with features such as driver massage seats, an 8-speaker audio system, a 15.6-inch infotainment screen, and an electric sunroof.

The Ora 5 offers a technology-focused interior. It gets a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.6-inch touchscreen, Coffee OS infotainment, and a panoramic glass roof.

The Ora 5 also includes features such as a 9-speaker audio system, ventilated seats, welcome seats, a spare tire, and a hidden rear wiper.

Performance

The Omoda E5 Pro is powered by a 99 kW electric motor producing 288 Nm of torque.

The Ora 5 uses a 100 kW motor with 260 Nm of torque. While the Ora 5 has slightly higher power output, the Omoda E5 Pro offers higher torque.

Conclusion

The Omoda E5 Pro and Ora 5 target different types of buyers. The Omoda E5 Pro focuses on premium comfort, cabin features, and a sporty appearance.

The Ora 5 offers a longer range, higher ground clearance, and a distinctive design with practical features.

With more electric SUVs entering the Rs 5 million segment, competition is no longer limited to battery size and motor power. Design, technology, comfort, and daily usability are becoming key factors for buyers.
